Minutes from RI NEMBA meeting held on June 7, 2016

Area Riding Reports (as of 5/3/16):

  • Big River: Maintenance is needed on some of the lesser ridden trails. There are reports of debris in the trails which should be cleaned up before go-arounds develop. A rogue trail builder (believed to be a dog-walker) is spray-painting dogs on trees.
  • Arcadia: Riding well.
  • Lincoln Woods: Bridge repair is needed. This should be completed before the Fun Ride.
  • Burlingame: No report.
  • Diamond Hill: Riding well.
  • Weetomoe Woods: Riding fantastic.

Topics:

  • Big River Fun Ride: The Big River Fun Ride was held on Sunday, May 15, 2016 and was once-again a huge success with many positive comments including, “Really like that loop” from Bill B. Many thanks to Alan W. for coordinating this effort.
  • Intro to Trail Riding Clinic: The six-week Intro to Trail Riding Clinic has begun and will continue through June 27th. It is held Monday evenings at 6:00 pm in Ryan’s Park in North Kingstown. NBX Bikes is providing a limited number of demo bikes. Contact NBX’s Narragansett store (401-782-4444) to reserve a bike. Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times.
  • Meeting Street School Cycling Clinic: The six-week Meeting Street School Cycling Clinic was a huge success with approximately 20 third-graders participating. They learned basic bike riding skills, got to ride a few miles and had a healthy snack each week. This event provided many children with some great outdoor recreation and many with their first cycling experience. In thanks the children drew and, through Alan W., presented RI NEMBA with poster. They also created personalized thank-you bags for each of the volunteers. The children can’t wait to do it again.
  • Arcadia Bridge Project: Shimano is taking the lead in coordinating and organizing the approved-bridge project at Stepstone Falls. Details to come.
  • Big River Bridge Project: There was discussion about the bridge project on the 2nd left off Burnt Sawmill. The bridge will be built for bikers and hikers. Details to come.
  • RI NEMBA Facebook Group Page: There was discussion regarding the possibility of renaming the RI NEMBA Facebook Group Page. It was decided that we would not rename the page, but that the Administrators of the page would more diligently monitor the posts and take down any posts that were in conflict with the NEMBA mission.
  • Big River Signage Project: Pete G. reported that there has been no change and it is a slow-moving process.
  • Bravo Award:
Although there will not be a Bravo Award awarded every month, this month the Bravo Award goes to Alan Windsor. Alan W. coordinated another great Big Rive Fun Ride in May and more significantly coordinated the six-week Meeting Street School Cycling Clinic - held at a different location each week (East Bay Bike Path, Blackstone Bike Path, Coventry Bike Path, Ryan’s Park and Big River). Alan W. was thanked for his outstanding contributions and was presented with a token of gratitude.

Treasurer’s Report: Bart A. provided the Board with the monthly Treasurer’s Report. The Board asked the Treasurer to provide a history of RI NEMBA’s finances. This information would be used to determine how our resources are spent and to better plan projects and expenses.

    New Business/Information:

    • Volunteer Hours: RI NEMBA would like to track all volunteer hours. Rich W. offered to tackle this project. Event coordinators will provide this information to Rich W.
    • RI NEMBA Pins: Rich W. brought a sample of small RI NEMBA pins and distributed them to everyone at the meeting.

Membership: Current membership total was not reported.

There will be no July meeting due to the 4th of July holiday. A Board of Directors Meeting may be scheduled before our next meeting. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 7:00 PM at Doherty’s.
The meeting adjourned at 8:58 pm.
