Minutes from RI NEMBA meeting held on October 3, 2017

Membership Total:Unreported.

  • Around the Room:President Matt began and everyone introduced and said something about themselves.
  • Treasurer’s Report: Bart A. provided the Board with the monthly Treasurer’s Report. Listed below are some identified expenses:
    1. Meeting Street Donation. RI NEMBA will make an annual donation to Meeting Street School at their Annual Telethon at the end of the year.
    2. Lincoln Woods Fun Ride Expenses. The location of the Lincoln Woods Fun Ride has been changed to the beach area, thus saving approximately $300 to have the gate opened.
    3. Holiday Party. We will subsidize the cost of the tickets as we have done in the past.
  • Status of New Business from Last Month:
    1. Big River Clean-Up Branching Out. President Matt has spoken with Brendan Dee about contacting the land manager for Lincoln Woods and Snake Den as possible candidates for our clean-up efforts. There was much discussion about having a RI NEMBA presence at different locations, including Big River.
    2. RI NEMBA T-Shirts. President Matt reported that the blaze-orange RI NEMBA T-shirts should be available at the Lincoln Woods Fun Rider or the Holiday Party.
    3. Neutaconkanut Hill Trail-Building. Amanda R. reported that a meeting in early November has been proposed.
    4. Trail-Building School Opportunities. President Matt has contacted Philip K. and learned that NEMBA is working on next year’s schedule for Trail Building School Opportunities. We will revisit this when the schedule is finalized. Again, after much discussion, it was emphasized that we should lead by example: police our own riding groups, pick up trash and stop and close down illegal trails.
  • Arcadia Fun Ride: The Arcadia Fun Ride was held on Sunday, September 17, 2017 and was deemed a huge success. The only criticism was that there really wasn’t a beginner loop, only a shorter one. After some discussion it was decided that next year we will explore other areas in Arcadia to stage our fun ride in order to possibly provide a true beginner loop. Unfortunately the Eddie’s Barbeque food truck broke down and was unable to get to Arcadia post-ride. Country Pizza came to the rescue and was able to supply pizza for all.
  • Westerly Municipal Land Trust (Lucey Properties): President Matt reported that next Trail Build Day will be held on Sunday, October 8th. Jim Federico from the Westerly Municipal Land Trust will be there to open the gate for us. Glenn T. has again laid out 2.5 miles of trails.
  • IT / Web Communication Items: President Matt informed us that he again invited the land managers of our different riding areas to our monthly meeting in order to establish and/or maintain a good relationship.
  • Official RI NEMBA Rides: President Matt would like to have regular RI NEMBA rides. He will reach out to land managers to explore this opportunity. We should develop a core group of members to lead rides, especially any beginner rides.
  • Lincoln Woods Fun Ride: The Lincoln Fun Ride will be held on November 19th. Brendan D. will provide us with volunteer needs. As in the past, this ride will be a fund-raiser for the RI Food Bank. Due to the fact that the Food Bank often discards some of the food collected (due to expiration dates or lack of need of a particular item), we would like to focus on cash donations this year.
  • Holiday Party: The Holiday Party will be held at Doherty’s on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 7:00 pm. Elections of officers will be held at the meeting. Nominations for officers will be held at the November Meeting.
  • Area Riding Reports: There were no issues reported.
  • New Business:
    1. Fun Ride Suggestions: Leo C. suggested having maps of the loop(s) available for the riders and Chris H. suggested having a large copy of the same available at Registration – possibly beginning with the Lincoln Woods Fun Ride. Craig M. suggested also having legend explaining loops, arrow colors, etc. at Registration.
    2. NEMBA Updates: Matt S. reported on some recent NEMBA updates. Local Chapters of NEMBA will be receiving increased rebates. There are Trail Grants available and President Matt said he would look into this for Woody Hill. Matt S. also explained that a Signature Grant worth $10,000 will be awarded next year. Matt S. also asked what RI NEMBA could use. After much discussion, equipment and a trailer to store the equipment was a unanimous need. President Matt suggested revisiting this next year depending on our trail-building opportunities.
    3. Women’s Mastermind Day. Amanda R. reported that Stacey J. at Quiet Corner NEMBA is hosting the Women’s Mastermind Day (a women’s brainstorming day), on Saturday, October 14, 2017.
    4. Professional Mountain Bikers Instructors Association (PMBI): PMBI holds training sessions for beginner ride instructors which is something we should explore for our ride leaders.

Next month’s meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at 7:00 pm at Doherty’s.
President Matt thanked everyone for their attendance and participation, and the meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.
